Creator return measured from a declared outcome and full cost, not invented sales credit
Measure creator return with a declared outcome, full cost, net contribution, attribution window and evidence limits instead of invented sales credit.
Measure return only after defining the intended outcome, observation period and evidence source. The arithmetic is simple; deciding which revenue and cost belong to a parenting campaign is harder. This method uses no assumed sales, conversion rate or benchmark.
What to take away
- Define the intended outcome, observation period and evidence source before measuring any return.
- Use verified attributable revenue, then subtract refunds, taxes and variable fulfilment costs to get net contribution.
- Total the full campaign cost, including creator fee, staff time, production, travel, rights and measurement.
- Do not calculate a percentage when full campaign cost is zero or materially incomplete.
Name one commercial outcome
Choose an outcome the business can verify, such as completed paid orders, accepted enquiries or retained adult subscriptions. A view, like or click may help explain delivery, but it is not revenue. Record secondary editorial and safeguarding measures separately so that commercial pressure does not reward unnecessary exposure of a child.
If the content is advertising, identify it before measuring it. The ASA's current UK social media guidance requires immediate recognition and explains why ambiguous labels or a platform tool alone may fail. A campaign that depends on concealed influence does not become acceptable because it converts.
Lock the observation and attribution rules
State start and end dates, eligible channels, attribution window, identifier, treatment of repeat customers and excluded activity. Decide how cancellations, returns, discounts and duplicated events will be handled. Freeze those rules before reading the result.
A workable default is a 30-day click window and a 7-day view window. Use a single campaign code in the destination link and in the order record, such as pi_parenting_2025_q1.
Platform data has technical limits. YouTube's global Advanced Mode documentation describes report filters, comparisons and exports, while noting a 500-row limit on downloaded reports and retention limits for some reporting data. Preserve the dated export and configuration used.
Do not combine unlike platform definitions without a reconciliation note. Where the creator cannot see the advertiser's completed-order record, report delivery metrics and state that financial return is unverified.
Calculate net contribution before return
Use verified attributable revenue, then subtract refunds, taxes collected for HMRC and variable fulfilment costs. The result is net contribution for this calculation. It is not the same as gross sales or money received into the bank.
Next total the full campaign cost: creator fee, staff time, employer costs, freelance support, production, travel, rights, paid distribution, measurement, corrections and allocated overhead. Use actual invoices and time records where available. Mark an estimate as an estimate.
For UK parenting campaigns, creator fees and production costs vary with audience size, exclusivity, usage rights and whether the creator handles filming. Treat any quoted range as an estimate until you have a written quote.
HMRC tells self-employed people to keep all sales, income and expense records so they can establish profit or loss. Its record-keeping guidance also distinguishes unpaid amounts under traditional accounting. This matters when a campaign appears profitable but the customer has not paid.
The calculation is:
return percentage = (net contribution minus full campaign cost) divided by full campaign cost multiplied by 100
Worked example, all figures illustrative and in pounds sterling. A campaign records £10,000 of VAT-exclusive attributable revenue. Refunds are £500. VAT collected for HMRC is £2,000. Variable fulfilment costs are £1,500. Net contribution is £10,000 minus £500 minus £1,500, which equals £8,000.
Full campaign cost is £5,000: creator fee £3,000, staff time £1,000, production £500, measurement £200 and allocated overhead £300. Return percentage is (£8,000 minus £5,000) divided by £5,000 multiplied by 100, which equals 60 per cent.
Do not calculate a percentage when full campaign cost is zero or materially incomplete. Report the missing denominator instead.
Apply VAT consistently
Use either VAT-exclusive or VAT-inclusive amounts throughout, according to the organisation's status and purpose. Do not mix net supplier costs with gross creator income. HMRC's VAT record page explains purchase, sales, invoice and digital-record requirements for registered businesses.
The current VAT registration test is based on taxable turnover, including a £90,000 threshold, not profit. A return calculation is not the place to decide uncertain registration, place-of-supply or recovery questions.
Explain what the number cannot prove
A positive result does not by itself show that the creator caused every recorded sale. Promotions, other channels, seasonality and existing demand may also contribute. Compare with a predeclared baseline or controlled method where the data permits it, then describe residual uncertainty.
Likewise, a negative first-period figure may include reusable production or rights. Allocate such costs only through an approved accounting method; do not move them merely to improve the result.
Publish the inputs beside the percentage: dates, outcome, sources, attribution rule, exclusions, contribution definition, cost coverage and unknowns. Qualified finance and advertising review is required before this held draft becomes guidance for a real campaign.
Before you act
- Identify advertising content before measuring it.
- Preserve the dated export and configuration used.
- Publish the inputs beside the percentage.
Common questions
What should be recorded separately from commercial outcomes?
Record secondary editorial and safeguarding measures separately so that commercial pressure does not reward unnecessary exposure of a child. A view, like or click may help explain delivery, but it is not revenue. This keeps the commercial calculation distinct from other measures.
How should platform data limits be handled?
Preserve the dated export and configuration used. Do not combine unlike platform definitions without a reconciliation note.
