Rules and ethics

Part of UK compliance for parenting publishers, starting with the item rather than the account label

Advertising rules for parenting creators by format: where the Ad label goes in video, stories, carousels and podcasts

Where the Ad label goes in a parenting creator's video, story, carousel and podcast, with the wording to avoid, platform tools and the UK law behind the label.

A parenting creator rarely posts in one format. The same paid brief can become a reel, three story cards, a carousel and a podcast mention. Each needs its own label check before release, and a miss belongs among the risk scenarios a team rehearses.

What to take away

  • The label rule covers photos, carousels, videos, reels, stories and podcasts alike.
  • Wording and position are separate testspass both in every format.
  • Platform tags may not be enough, so add Ad upfront when a tag is unclear.
  • Paid promotion without a clear label is a banned practice under UK consumer law.
  • Content that features children needs a section 5 check under the CAP Code.

Pick the label words first

The CMA guidance for content creators tells creators to use a label that clearly identifies the content as an ad, such as ad, advert, advertising or advertisement. Choose one and use it in every format.

Some words fail. Unclear or ambiguous terms to avoid include #gift, #gifted, #aff, #affiliate, #collab, #PRTrip, #spon and #sponsored. Tagging the brand, using a discount code or adding an affiliate link is not enough on its own. Write the approved label into the brief so the editor is not choosing words at midnight.

Format check: video and reels

The rule applies to videos and reels in the same way as to photos. The test is speed: it must be immediately clear that the content is an ad, and that must hold as soon as anyone engages with it.

For video, spoken disclosure must come at the beginning, not in the closing credits. Put the Ad label on screen in the first frames and in the caption. Disclosure labels should not be hidden among a pile of hashtags or set in a colour that clashes with the background. Check the opening on a phone and on a desktop.

Format check: stories and carousels

A story is a sequence of short cards, and a carousel is a sequence of images. Both let a viewer land mid-way. If you use carousels, or sequences where the audience can open individual posts, you must also label each item that contains promotional messaging.

A label on card one does not protect card four. Add Ad to every card that shows or mentions the product. Apply the same rule to a gift: a family unboxing in stories is still an ad if the brand sent the pack.

Format check: podcasts and audio

Audio has no screen label, so the voice does the work. For podcasts and videos, the disclosure for ads must be given at the beginning of the ad. A short spoken line placed before the product is described meets the timing test.

Repeat the line if the product returns later in the episode. Add the written label to the show notes and the episode title when the whole episode is sponsored. Do not rely on the show description alone.

Where each format puts the label

FormatWhere the label goesFails if

StoryOn every card that shows or mentions the productOnly on the first card
CarouselOn each item with promotional messagingOnly in the caption

Platform tools are a help, not a pass

Some platforms have tools that label content automatically, such as "paid partnership" or "branded content". You can use them, provided the label is clear and easy to see or access.

Check what the viewer actually sees. If the tool does not clearly convey that the content is an ad, include the label #Ad in a clear, upfront position as well. The audience should not have to scroll, select a link, resize the screen, open your profile page or bio, or know your earlier posts to work it out.

The law behind the label

A trader who uses editorial content in the media to promote a product, having paid for the promotion without making that clear in the content or by images or sounds clearly identifiable by the consumer, commits a banned practice (Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, Schedule 20).

For a creator, that is the legal footing for the label. Put the duty into the creator contract, and record the label decision in your disclosure policy so reposts and clips keep it.

When children appear in the content

CAP Code section 5 holds the rules for advertising targeted at, and featuring, children, and rule 5.1 asks that ads contain nothing likely to result in physical, mental or moral harm to them.

A family feed often shows children by default, so the section can apply even when the product is for adults. Pair the label check with the safeguarding checks for child influencers, and test the first-view label in a YouTube launch review before release.

Before you post

  • Use one approved label word, not a word from the avoid list.
  • Place the label at the start of the video, caption or audio segment.
  • Label every story card and carousel item that shows the product.
  • Check what a platform tag actually shows, and add Ad if it is unclear.
  • Run the quality checklist and save screenshots of the first view.

Common questions

Is a platform's paid partnership tag enough?

Only if the label is clear and easy to see. When the tool does not clearly convey that the content is an ad, add Ad upfront as well.

Does a gifted product need a label?

Yes. The label rule covers gifts, discounts and free products, however many followers the account has.

Does a podcast need a written label too?

The spoken disclosure must come at the beginning of the ad. A written label in the show notes is a sensible backup.
